The Cape Decision Lighthouse is perched on the very southern tip of Kuiu Island.
The southwestern end of Kuiu is open to swells off the Pacific Ocean while the majority of the Kuiu’s west coast is on Chatham Strait and is protected by Baranof Island. Everything to the northeast of Cape Decision is protected water and boasts some of the finest wilderness sea kayaking in southeast Alaska. The entirety of Kuiu Island is federally owned, save the 216 acre CDLS Lighthouse Reserve that surrounds Cape Decision.
A, B, C, & D on this map show established sea kayaking/canoe portage routes that have been used by Native Alaskans for centuries and contemporary boaters alike.
